Growing microgreens teaches us more than how to grow food. It’s a crash course in making the most of what you have, wasting less, and turning small habits into big eco-wins. Here are five simple zero-waste habits that sprout naturally from your microgreen journey:
1. Reuse Containers Creatively
Those yogurt cups, takeout trays, and berry boxes? Don’t toss them—plant in them! With a few drainage holes and a little imagination, your recycling bin becomes a seed-starting haven.
Kid bonus: Let them decorate their containers with markers and stickers. Growing greens just became a bonus craft project! Plus, I find letting my kiddos decorate the trays makes them more willing to be involved from start to finish…which means more greens in their growing bodies. I’ll take that win (and suffer the glitter) anyday!!

2. Compost the Leftovers
Used soil and root mats don’t belong in the trash. They’re packed with nutrients! Add them to your compost bin or mix them into outdoor planters for a free soil boost.
No backyard? A small indoor compost bin works just fine (and yes, it can be odor-free!).
3. Buy in Bulk and Share with Friends
Buying microgreen seeds in bulk reduces packaging and saves money. Split a large bag with a friend or neighbour—and start your own little seed co-op.
Because honestly, who doesn’t want to be the person known for gifting fresh greens?
4. Harvest What You Need
No need to cut the whole tray at once. Microgreens stay fresh and vibrant when left in the soil for a while, so snip only what you need for today’s lunch and let the rest keep growing.
It’s like a mini salad bar—on standby in your kitchen.
5. Turn Scraps Into Meals

Leftover roasted veggies? A scoop of rice? That one last tortilla? Add microgreens and boom—you’ve got a zero-waste wrap, bowl, or toast topper.
Delicious, nutritious, and resourceful.
Grow Smarter. Live Greener.
Sustainable living doesn’t have to be complicated. Your microgreens are already doing the work—now let them inspire your whole kitchen.
