Starting your first tray of microgreens? Amazing, you’re in for a delicious ride. But even the most enthusiastic new growers can run into a few bumps (or soggy messes) along the way.
Here are 5 common beginner mistakes, and how to avoid them with confidence:
1. Overwatering (aka drowning your greens)
Microgreens like it moist, not marinated. Too much water causes mold, root rot, and sad, floppy stems. Fix it: Mist gently 1–2 times a day. Make sure your container has drainage holes.

2. Skipping the light
They’re not vampires—they need sunlight! Without enough light once they start to break through, microgreens get leggy, pale, and weak.
Fix it: Place trays near a sunny window or use a grow light for strong, happy greens.
3. Seed clumping
Tossing your seeds in like parmesan on pasta? Yikes. Overcrowding = uneven growth and mold zones.
Fix it: Spread seeds evenly in a single layer. Less is more!
4. Harvesting too soon (or too late)
Impatient? We get it. But cutting too early means less flavor, and too late means bitter greens.
Fix it: Harvest when the first true leaves start to appear—usually day 7–10.

5. Using low-quality seeds
Not all seeds are created equal. Cheap or old seeds = patchy germination and questionable taste. Fix it: Use high-quality, preferably organic, seeds made for microgreen growing.
You’ve Got This!
Mistakes happen. Greens can grow back. And every tray you plant brings you one step closer to snackable, healthy, homegrown success.
