Your microgreens might be tiny, but they’re thirsty…and picky. Water too much? You get mold. Too little? You’ve got sad, wilted greens. So what’s a grower to do? Whether you’re sprouting on your kitchen counter or managing a whole shelf system, mastering the art of hydration is essential to happy, healthy microgreens.
Top Watering: A Gentle Start
Best for the beginning stages – pre-planting and just before germination.
- Use a spray bottle with a fine mist (think gentle rain, not a firehose).
- Dampen the surface evenly. Aim for “moist sponge,” not “swamp.”
- Be kind to your seeds: no flooding, no blasting.
Bottom Watering: Your Mold-Free Bestie
Once your greens start growing, switch to bottom watering like a true plant whisperer.
- Place your growing tray into a bottom tray with 1½ to 2 cups of water.
- Let it sit for 10–15 minutes, then drain any leftover water.
- Keeps stems dry and mold at bay.
How Often to Water? It Depends.
- Water once a day to start, maybe more as your microgreens bulk up.
- Watch for soil dryness or droopiness.
- Avoid overwatering like your harvest depends on it (because it kinda does).
Mold Prevention 101
Mold is the party crasher of your microgreen setup. Show it the door by:
- Keeping air flowing with fans or open windows.
- Not overcrowding your trays (microgreens need personal space too).
- Cleaning trays and surfaces regularly. Yes, your greens care about hygiene.
What’s in Your Water?
- Chlorine can mess with microgreens. If your tap water smells like a swimming pool, let it sit out overnight, or filter it.
- Hard water? Soften it or balance the pH with lemon juice or vinegar.
- Want to go the extra mile? Test your water and treat it like the secret ingredient it is.
Keep the Balance
Too much water = swampy roots. Too little = crispy sadness.
- Always drain out excess water.
- Don’t let trays sit in puddles, unless you’re growing watercress on purpose.
- Stick to a routine. Microgreens love consistency (don’t we all?).
Why It Matters
A great hydration game = microgreens that are flavorful, vibrant, and bursting with nutrients. Plus, mold-free greens make you look like a total boss.
